Additional damages will soon occur if you do not make an effort to free your head from those negative thoughts that usually leads to depression. You will not be able to beat alcohol addiction if you don’t prevent that depression from setting in. Even though you have the right program in your hand, you still can’t get rid of that negative habit if you are depressed.


Now that you are quitting alcohol, you must, at all times, think of good things rather than creating ghost-like images in your head. Think of the benefits you would enjoy being alcohol free. You are now doing the right decision, and while it is true that it is difficult to quit, you can make it easier for you just by avoiding depression and negativity. Thinking positively and doing what is necessary will lead your feet to genuine recovery.

Depression can trigger relapse. If you are depressed and sad, your system will seek for ways to feel better, and that is when that strong craving for alcohol attacks. It will become a part of your regular thinking and eventually will lead you to get back into your negative habit. This is the same question I, as an alcoholic, asked during the time I was just planning to quit alcohol. Though I have many questions in my mind, I am very much concern about how long will it take for my alcohol cravings to go away. I need to know this, and I believe all alcoholics should be aware of this, too, to anticipate the situations that are associated with these cravings. I know that it is difficult to stop this “thirst”, because it cannot be resolve by drinking water. And this strong desire to consume alcohol again can pull me out of my plans to quit.

I am aware of the fact that it may take a long time before I can get rid of my cravings for alcohol. My body has become accustomed to the addictive substance. It is guaranteed that my body will crave for it. I had a long relationship with alcohol, abused it and eventually got addicted to it. My system has developed a physically powerful addiction through the excessive supply of alcohol in my body. And taking alcohol away from it will definitely create a sudden, impulsive reaction in my system. And that's the most difficult part - fighting against myself, trying to win over my own self.

It is not important how long my cravings will last. It doesn't matter if I can make myself familiarized with the duration the cravings will continue staying in my system. It may take days, months or years, even forever. What is important is to learn how to prevent it, gain knowledge on how to overcome just in case it already go through the system and have the skills on how to handle these cravings without suffering too much. As long as I have the necessary “weapon” in dealing with cravings for alcohol, I can continue my journey. By having the required skills, it will not be a problem for me even if it takes years to get rid of these symptoms. The best way to overcome the cravings is to learn on how to deal with them on my own. It will not help if I just sit down and wonder when these cravings will go away.

If you are struggling to get rid of the cravings for alcohol, here are some basic and simple steps that you can do on your own to stop thinking about drinking:

Make your mind busy all the time. I mean it: all the time. This will prevent your mind to think about alcohol. Prevention is better than cure. If you are busy all the time, your mind will forget alcohol. You can focus your mind to your work. If you have an eight hour job, this will be easy. You will need to deal with the extra hours by other means. You may want to dedicate your time after work to your family. Try to have a quality time by joining them for dinner or watching your favorite TV program. If you don't have work to attend, find one.

Avoid stress and depressions. When you are quitting alcohol, stress related events can trigger cravings due to the fact that your mind and body are seeking for consolations that they believe can make them feel better. You must avoid feeling stressed in order to prevent your mind think of alcohol. Choose to be happy. Do not hesitate to talk with your loved ones whenever you feel lonely. You must discuss with them what and how you feel. Bring out your emotions by simply talking with people who you trust.

Motivate yourself. Once you learn how to avoid stress, you may want to realize how you can motivate yourself to continue the abstinence you have just started. Think of the negative side of the coin. In my case, I will project myself in a negative situation while under the influence. Remember that if you really want to go alcohol free, you must learn how to have the will power and self-discipline. No one can help you but you. Everyone can support your plans on quitting alcohol but it is yourself that should move.

Medical experts believe that PROPANOLOL can stop alcohol cravings. It can ease the strong desire of an alcoholic to drink by blocking certain hormones released by the brain. Clinical trials show that people who are quitting alcohol and are taking Propanolol can actually overcome their alcohol cravings. There is no magical technique that can instantly wash away all my problems associated with alcohol. We reap what we sow, right? If I plant some bad seeds, I will surely harvest bad crops. But I strongly believe that this can be repaired. These entire problems can be resolved, if I try to do my best. Lastly, we all know that young people see their parents as ideal people they can imitate and when they see that nobody drinks in the family, they absorb this principle as they grow up and they eventually become non-drinkers themselves.

An ounce of prevention is always better than a pound of cure. Parents are given a rare opportunity to see life as it unfolds, from birth to adolescence and finally, to adulthood. Today is a new start for me. I finally decided to quit alcohol. I am determined and confident to change my life for the better. I have attempted numerous times in the past to kick off the habit – excessive drinking, alcohol abuse and all, but, unfortunately, there was no success. Now, after all the wrong doings and the positive realization, I believe that I have enough determination, motivation and have accumulated enough knowledge on how to quit alcohol to start a new life. I believe that life can still be sweeter and happier even without alcohol. This time, I will make sure that I will win over this terrible condition (for the last time) and bring back the shattered pieces of my life.

I strongly believe that if a person has the right motivations and knows how to use them for his own advantage, he can “effortlessly” combat alcohol addiction and he can “easily” deal with all its associated symptoms – specifically cravings for alcohol, that go along with the disease. These inspirations will also create a strong foundation that will eventually serve as mechanism to help the individual survive the quitting process. With the right approach and timing, motivations and inspirations will promote a very smooth recovery.

You cannot get rid of it in an instant. Give yourself some time to adjust and adopt the changes in your system. Your dependence to alcohol and the abusive behavior of drinking may be strong and you can win over it if you allow your system to regulate with the flow of events.

Be inspired by other recovering alcoholic’s stories. Stories from other alcoholic who were in the same shoes just like you before can motivate you. The negative circumstances that had happened to them while they are abusing alcohol will make you realize that you need to stop drinking now to prevent those from happening to you. Learning from their experiences will somehow lead you to the decision that you need to quit drinking alcohol before it’s too late. Likewise, their steps in quitting drinking alcohol can be useful to you and their escape door can become your escape door, too. This pattern can increase your knowledge and makes you familiarized on how they are able to beat alcohol addiction.

If you experience relapse, don’t worry, think of it as a challenge. In my case, I do have failed attempts, too. There are times that I think of giving it up and just want to sit down and have a drink. But, I just focused my mind on the problem and tried quitting alcohol again.

Drinking alcohol is habitual. And if someone has already realized he is being controlled by this habit, and has become conscious that the habit has eventually turned into an addiction, in fact, a powerful one, he might be thinking of only one thing – that is to quit the habit of drinking before it totally breaks him into pieces. He might have already realized he needs to quit alcohol in order to prevent additional damages to his life, to his health and to his family. He might have thought of beating alcohol addiction on his own. But the next question that comes to mind is: how one can beat alcohol addiction by means of one’s own initiative? Is it difficult to deal with it if the habit has created a strong addiction on one’s life? Can someone really overcome cravings for alcohol even without help from medications or synthetic drugs?

One might have the determination to give up alcohol and lead his life towards sobriety. He might have enough inspiration to work things out. But, there is another problem - he doesn't have the proper knowledge about the process of quitting drinking. He may perhaps know that he has enough willpower to give up the habit but what he doesn't know is where to begin. He may possibly accumulate a rough plan in his mind about quitting alcohol but he can’t turn it into reality. He might have the right map to reach sobriety but he doesn't know how to use it for his advantage.

Many people are struggling to get out of the addiction. They have tried many alcohol addiction treatments and rehabilitation programs, including medical procedures, to help them overcome their condition but only to find out that they are still under attack of the same old habit that has reached its peak and is now at its worst stage. They find themselves holding a bottle of beer, back into binge drinking and alcohol abuse, continually adding more problems in their lives.

Recognizing the reasons why you are drinking is the second step in beating alcohol addiction. These reasons are the reason why you became hooked to alcohol. These are the roots of the problem. We must identify the roots so that we can easily extract them from your being. This will also get rid of unnecessary negative thoughts and feelings that have grown in your personality and behavior due to constant abuse of alcohol. Alcohol is a kind of depressant. The third step in beating alcohol addiction on your own is admitting that you have this addiction, this kind of problem. This includes acknowledging, at least to yourself, your rash and wild decisions, offensive and/or indecency activities, and uncontrollable behaviors every time you are under the influence of alcohol. Every bit of your negative actions that are associated with abuse and nonstop excessive drinking should then be identified so that you can change those negative attitudes.

Fourth is to focus on your path. People who successfully quit drinking will prove to you that they never allow interruptions go in their way. Depression is an interruption. It triggers cravings for alcohol that can interrupt your willpower to fully excel. Avoid depressive situations. Prevent sadness. Deject the feeling of despair before it actually happen. You can do this by having the right motivational technique in handling down depressions and other stress related activities that you can encounter along the way. How? A person is considered an “addict” if he or she has become dependent to any substance or activity. People often connect the term “addiction” to drugs and alcohol. But the truth is, an individual who repeatedly consume any substance or perform any activity even though that substance or activity has negative effects on his physical, emotional, social and psychological aspects and life is also considered to have an addiction.
